In the series, Drescher played Nanny Fine, a super stylish, fierce woman from Queens, New York tasked with rearing three Upper East Side kids.<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_9-0\">The idea, she says, stemmed from an outing she had in London with her friend Twiggy\u2019s then 12-year-old daughter, but the real opening was when she found herself sitting near the president of CBS on an airplane.<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_11-0\">\u201cHe walked on and I\u2019m thinking, \u201cOh, my God, that\u2019s the president of CBS, Jeff Sagansky.\u201d I thought, \u2018Thank you, Lord.\u2019<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_13-0\">She decided to brazenly talk to him about work.<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_17-0\">\u201cI saw it as an opportunity. I was not going to get in my way. I was just going to push that door open. I mean, opportunity knocks every day. If you have the tenacity and the chutzpah to recognize it and do something about it on the spot, do it. Don\u2019t get in your way and say, \u2018Oh, I can\u2019t bother him on the plane. He\u2019s a big important man.\u2019 No.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_19-0\">Drescher says he agreed to a meeting. Then she just needed to come up with the pitch.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"mntl-sc-block_21-0\"><figcaption id=\"mntl-figure-caption_2-0\">Michael Schwartz; Ron Galella\/Ron Galella Collection via Getty<br \/>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_24-0\">\u201cI was visiting Twiggy in London \u2014\u00a0I\u2019d done that short-lived series with her \u2014\u00a0and she and her husband were working. So I ended up with their 12-year-old daughter, schlepping her all over London with me so I would have a companion to go touring with. And she all of a sudden says, \u2018Hey Fran, my new shoes are hurting me.\u2019 And I\u2019m thinking, \u2018Why is she telling me? Does she want me to take her home? Because I\u2019m not ready yet.\u2019 \u201c<\/p>\n<figure id=\"mntl-sc-block_26-0\"><figcaption id=\"mntl-figure-caption_3-0\">Donna Ward\/Getty<br \/>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_27-0\">Drescher instead dished out her best Queens fashion advice.<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_29-0\">\u201cI said, \u2018Oh, honey, just step on the backs of them.\u2019 And she said innocently, \u2018Won\u2019t that break them?\u2019 And I said, \u2018Break them\u00a0<em>in<\/em>.\u2019 And I just couldn\u2019t get this unorthodox relationship between an adult and a child out of my head because I wasn\u2019t telling her what was good for\u00a0<em>her<\/em>. I was telling her what was good for\u00a0<em>me<\/em>. I didn\u2019t want to sacrifice my afternoon for her. I wanted her to break her shoes in so I could keep touring London!\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_33-0\">She called her then-husband and writing partner Peter Marc Jacobson with the idea.<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_35-0\">\u201cI said, \u2018I think I have the idea. What do you think about a spin on\u00a0<em>The Sound of Music,<\/em>\u00a0only instead of Julie Andrews,<em>\u00a0I\u00a0<\/em>come to the door.\u201d And he thought for only a moment, and he said, \u201cThat\u2019s it. That\u2019s the show we\u2019re going to pitch to CBS. The minute you get home, we\u2019ll flesh it out. We\u2019ll develop it a little more.\u201d And that\u2019s what we went in with, without what they call a log line, and they green-lighted it right there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_37-0\"><strong>Never miss a story \u2014 sign up for\u00a0PEOPLE\u2019s free daily newsletter to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer\u200b\u200b, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_40-0\">A\u00a0decade after\u00a0<em>The Nanny\u00a0<\/em>ended in 1999, Drescher and Jacobson pitched a new series:\u00a0<em>Happily Divorced<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_42-0\">It was modeled after their own relationship, which ended in 1999, after which Peter came out as gay. (The show ran from 2011 to 2013.) It took a few years to re-form a bond, but Drescher says she and Jacobson became closer than ever after he came out.<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_44-0\">\u201cWe\u2019re soulmates,\u201d Drescher says, adding that she cherishes having a \u201cgay ex-husband.
