The mystery surrounding Ethan Lovett\u2019s return to Port Charles on\u00a0General Hospital<\/em>\u00a0deepened when the show revealed that he\u2019s connected to the deceased Delilah (Lily Cardone) \u2014 and her baby girl, Phoebe (Luna and Lucia Creighton). Ethan\u2019s portrayer,\u00a0Nathan Dean,\u00a0spoke to\u00a0Soap Opera Digest<\/em>\u00a0about Ethan and Delilah\u2019s connection, Phoebe\u2019s possible paternity and what\u2019s ahead for the character as the mystery deepens.<\/p>\n

Ethan\u2019s Return and His Connection to Delilah and Phoebe<\/h2>\n

When it came to Ethan\u2019s storyline, Dean \u201chad no idea what the plan was\u201d when he first signed on to return to the role he originally played from 2009-13. \u201cI wasn\u2019t given many clues at all as to what I\u2019d be doing. I saw the first script of him coming back and the reunion with Lulu [Alexa Havins] and then talking about Luke a bit, but that was basically all I knew.\u201d<\/p>\n

Soon, though, \u201cThere were some rumblings [backstage] about this other thing going on, something with a baby,\u201d he recounts. \u201cI was like, \u2018Hmm, what\u2019s going on with that?\u2019 And then, suddenly, it was like, \u2018Oh, wait! I\u00a0am<\/em>\u00a0involved with that!\u2019 That was sort of a fun surprise.\u201d<\/p>\n

GH\u00a0introduced Delilah back in March, a month before Ethan touched back down in town. Brook Lynn (Amanda Setton) and Chase (Josh Swickard) came to the pregnant woman\u2019s aid when they found her collapsed in the street, and after giving birth, she passed away. Brook Lynn and Chase soon became the baby\u2019s foster parents and are hoping to adopt her. Ethan, meanwhile, had been seen leaving messages for an unknown someone and growing increasingly concerned when the person he was calling was a persistent no-show at the daily rendezvous he arranged for them. He then had a big reaction to Delilah\u2019s name when Brook Lynn innocently told him about little Phoebe\u2019s origins. Upon finding out she had died, he tearfully \u2014 and secretly \u2014 burned a photo of them together and vowed to keep their secret safe.<\/p>\n

Dean shares that from the first one-way phone call he filmed Ethan making, he knew there was something more going on between Ethan and the mystery woman than, say, a simple love connection. \u201cThe way I thought about it was, \u2018I\u2019m flying halfway around the world to meet up with this girl, so there\u2019s obviously more to it.\u2019 Because Ethan is never the guy that\u2019s like, \u2018Let me bring [my significant other] home to meet the family.\u2019 He\u2019s never going to be that guy!\u201d<\/p>\n

Whatever the full Ethan\/Delilah story turns out to be, the actor notes, \u201cThis is a stronger relationship than we\u2019ve seen Ethan have or he wouldn\u2019t be burning her photo and doing all of these things. Obviously, there is a lot more to this relationship than we know about or that Ethan is willing to talk about.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Mystery of Phoebe\u2019s Paternity<\/h2>\n

The question dangling over Ethan\u2019s storyline since his link to Delilah was revealed is, of course: Is he Phoebe\u2019s father? Dean winks that just like the fans, he \u201ccan\u2019t wait to find out,\u201d and says that as the plot continues to unfold, Ethan\u2019s pull to the baby \u2014 which was already on full display on the\u00a0May 13 episode\u00a0when he could hardly keep his eyes off Phoebe while at the Metro Court Gardens with Kristina (Kate Mansi) \u2014 will only grow stronger. \u201cEthan is going to be making a lot of excuses to go to the Quartermaine mansion,\u201d Dean chuckles.<\/p>\n

The role of Phoebe is shared by twins Luna and Lucia Creighton and, to hear Dean tell it, it requires very little acting to appear smitten by them. \u201cOh, my God, they\u2019re both\u00a0adorable<\/em>,\u201d Dean smiles. \u201cWhen I\u2019m with them in scenes, they steal all the focus. The cameras love them and they love the camera. They\u2019re always in a good mood. I don\u2019t know what the trick is, I don\u2019t know how they do it, but those are two of the happiest, most alert, excited babies I\u2019ve ever seen in my life. They\u2019re wonderful.\u201d<\/p>\n
